Torbay retain Ross Shield at Brixham 10k
KAIRN Stone took the individual honours as a record field of runners tackled the Brixham 10k. The 31-year-old, running for Newham and Essex Beagles, recorded his third win over the undulating course, turning up the heat in the second half of the race.
The team event in the Brixham race belonged emphatically to Torbay AC, who successfully defended the Ross Shield, Devon's oldest competition for teams. South Devon Athletic Club hosted the race — backed by the Runner's Guide and 100% Health — at Churston Ferrers Grammar School, and a record 214 entries were received despite torrential rain on race morning.
However, those runners who did venture out were rewarded with sunshine by start-time. Fallen leaves on the first corner proved the downfall of the host club's Ross Shield team, with three South Devon runners slipping and hitting the deck in the first 50 metres of the race. All completed the race but needed patching up by St John Ambulance at the finish.
At the head of the race Stone and Tom Merson of South West Road Runners built a good lead by the halfway point, running shoulder to shoulder around Furzeham Green.
Next up was Torbay's Ashley Humphreys, himself well clear of the rest of the field. Stone made his decisive move on the way back through the lanes to Churston, crossing the finishing line in 33m 44s, a 17-second cushion ahead of Merson. Humphreys was another 18 seconds behind, with almost two minutes of clear road behind him to the fourth-placed runner.
